A Valentine’s Pity Party Playlist
So you’re alone and single on Valentine’s Day. It’s really not that big of a deal, is it? You could always do one of the fun things on this list, or you could throw an I Hate Valentine’s Day party just for kicks. But if you’re really feeling mopey and sad, why not embrace it? We all could use a good cry every now and then, and it’s healthy to express that sadness when it does arise. With that thought in mind, here are some must-play tunes for your Valentine’s pity party playlist.
“All By Myself”
Eric Carmen’s tearjerker song about being, well, all by yourself, is a must-have on a pity party playlist. He basically whines about not needing anyone when he was younger, but now he doesn’t want to be alone anymore over and over again. It’s actually a rather moving song for people who do realize late in life that sleeping around isn’t any fun anymore, and that they’d rather settle down.
“It Must Have Been Love”
Oh, how Roxette’s awesomely depressing breakup song touches us all. I didn’t even break up with my boyfriend and I still cried when I heard this song. It’s actually just a great song, too, with wonderfully visual imagery and lyrics. I wonder whatever happened to Roxette?
“Nothing Compares 2 U”
Sinead O’Connor’s gorgeous simple song must be on every breakup list. It’s haunting in a really innocent way, as are many of her songs, and it captures the heartbreak that you feel upon a really bad breakup or the severing of an emotional bond with someone you love.
“Don’t They Know It’s the End of the World”
God, not only is this song awfully depressing, but we’ll forever remember it as the record playing over and over again as Brittany Murphy’s character hanged herself in the film Girl, Interrupted. Please don’t get any ideas from this, but it’s still a great song to mope around to.
“Bang, Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)”
What a depressing song—and yet, it’s so catchy. The Cher version is much more upbeat, so you might want to skip it and go for Nancy Sinatra’s instead.
“I Fall to Pieces”
Do you see a pattern here? It seems like the most depressing songs ever made are by female artists. This one is by the ever lovely Patsy Cline, whom I could listen to all day, depressed or not.
